Collective Caterwauling
Otherwise known as singing in a choir.
I don’t really mean a proper choir, though as a choral singer I do get a lot of joy from being in one.
The joy I mean here is the joy of singing spontaneously in a group.
Those times where you’re on a bus or train, or walking down the street and someone starts to sing, causing more and more people to join in.
The best example of this is Happy Birthdays in a restaurant,
Where the whole building joins in, sometimes without even knowing who we’re singing to.
It’s a similar feeling to joining in with football chants,
Or singing a musician’s songs at a gig while they hold the microphone out to the audience.
It speaks to something primal in us.
It’s the way our souls connect when our external judgements get in the way.
This song has special memories for me.
It has special but different memories for you.
You may not have heard this one before but it still feels familiar.
We don’t have to know each other to connect through a song.
Those moments when a song pops into your head, purely because you heard someone say a phrase from it.
Then you sing it out loud.
When the moon hits your eye like a big pizza pie.
And a person reciprocates.
That’s amore.
Call and Response, folk choruses, chants
These ways of singing which have been part of our collective ancestry since civilisation began.
Next time you hear a lone voice out and about,
Don’t be shy, join in!
You never know who else might respond.
And before you know it, a joyful choir will emerge.
So that’s C!
My alternatives were, coke floats, childhood reminiscing and Cats the musical.
What would your C be?
Singing is bringing us at one with the divine! My c for today would be COFEE ❤️
